Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment. To such an extent indeed that one day, finding myself at the deathbed of a woman who had been and still was very dear to me, I caught myself in the act of focusing on her temples and automatically analyzing the succession of appropriately graded colors which death was imposing on her motionless face.
Claude Monet (1840–1926), French painter. Quoted in Claude Monet: Les Nymphéas, ch. 2 (1926).
Remark to Georges Clemenceau.

DailyColorScheme.com is a great way to explore new color combinations and get inspired by other’s color experiments. Every day, a new color combination is selected and posted to the site, along with files you can download for graphics program and web use. Unfortunately, it looks like the site hasn’t been updated in several months, but you can still peruse the archives of past color schemes.

The Coloriffic Swap-O-Rama group on Flickr is perfect for color enthusiasts who also enjoy swapping packages with people around the world. Every month, a color combination is selected, with inspirational images provided, and participants create handmade goodies and collect store-bought items in these colors, all to be sent to their assigned swap partner. Sign-ups are done through a separate site called Swap Bot and are done during the first few days of each month, with packages to be shipped within a month. Pictures of sent and received packages are definitely required.

Paint company Behr offers a color exploration tool on their web site, allowing you to select and experiment with their paint colors. The Explore Color tool lets you browse or search for specific colors, adjust them to just the right shade, and then try out combinations on sample home photos. There’s even an inspiration library with photos that launch into preset color combinations. You can save your colors as you go along (registration required), and even purchase paint samples directly from the site.

The Flickr Color Selectr lets you choose a color by adjusting the slider or color selector, and then it automatically loads Flickr images that contain that exact color. It’s really quite fun to play with, and is a great way to discover new photos — like the one shown — and photographers on the Flickr site.
